HSBC Appoints Henry Tong as New Marketing Leader in Singapore

Leadership Shift at HSBC Singapore

HSBC Singapore has announced the appointment of Henry Tong as its new head of customer, international and marketing. This change, effective from October 19, 2026, reflects the bank's strategy to enhance its customer offerings and expand its international wealth services.

Henry Tong's Background

Previously, Tong held a senior position at Citi, serving as managing director and head of wealth continuum for Asia South Wealth. He comes to HSBC with a robust background that spans over 35 years in wealth management, international banking, and business development.

New Role Responsibilities

In his new capacity, Tong will spearhead initiatives related to customer propositions and overall customer experiences. He will oversee integrated branding and marketing strategies specifically tailored for HSBC’s International Wealth and Premier Banking sectors in Singapore.

His key focus will be on enhancing customer offerings and fostering stronger relationships to drive the growth of the bank's international wealth division.

Strategic Insights from HSBC Leadership

According to Ashmita Acharya, the head of international wealth and premier banking at HSBC Singapore, Tong’s deep expertise in creating customer-centric and cross-border propositions will greatly enhance the bank's capabilities in addressing the complex needs of an increasingly global clientele.

“As our customers broaden their international scope, our ability to connect them with relevant opportunities and solutions across various markets is essential. Tong's extensive experience will bolster our efforts to meet the evolving international wealth demands of our clients in Singapore,”

Acharya noted.

HSBC’s Commitment to the Singapore Market

This appointment comes at a time when HSBC is significantly investing in Singapore, positioning it as a critical wealth management hub. The bank has made strides by doubling its technology expenditures over the past five years and expanding its physical presence, which now includes opening four new Wealth Centres since 2024.

Furthermore, HSBC has announced its plans to establish a Global AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore, aiming to hire more than 100 AI specialists. The bank is also looking to recruit an additional 100 relationship managers to support its growing operations.

Broader Banking Landscape Context

The move to appoint Tong aligns with recent changes within the wider Singapore banking sector. Earlier this year, UOB Bank appointed Marcus Chew as managing director of group retail marketing, while Sameer Gupta, exited from his role as group chief analytics officer at DBS Bank.

This period of leadership shifts highlights a dynamic environment in Singapore's banking industry, where adaptability and customer focus are more crucial than ever.
